ROUND TABLE | Between nature and artifice. The new forms of digital creativity

Speakers: Raffaello Galiotto, Domenico Potenza

Organized by: Veronafiere, Raffaello Galiotto Industrial Design

The nature is the classic one of the ancient herbariums: those reproduced by Mattioli in the 16th century are admirable, printed in woodcuts on wooden matrices engraved in relief. The artifice is the extraordinary one of the three-dimensional lithic reproduction modeled with the use of the most sophisticated technologies applied to numerical control machines. Raffaello Galiotto experiments, in his latest work set up for the 2023 edition of Marmomac, the unique re-proposition of those forms that appear more natural than nature itself has given them to us. Working with stone (Carlo Scarpa said) means subtracting something from nature and, sooner or later, that subtraction will have to be compensated. That restitution is entrusted to the hand of the artist, above all when he is able to re-propose it beyond the wonders of the forms of creation. Art, in its most successful expressions, has this extraordinary ability to add value to nature; it is that skilful relief of a mental image that manifests itself in the finished work and expresses something that was not there before and that the artist translates. This is Raffaello Galiotto's purpose to accompany us, through a fantastic vision of the forms of nature, in an augmented reality in which the artifice of the present becomes the encounter place between history and its possible future evolutions.

ROUND TABLE | Advanced research and lithic experimentation

Speakers: Giuseppe Fallacara, Alfonso Acocella, Luigi Prestinenza Puglisi, Paolo Musumeci, Antonio Leone, Chirstophe Aubertin

Organized by: Veronafiere, Marmomac meets Academies

No ancient nor modern materials can ever be found in architecture since it is the way materials are used and shaped that links them to a particular time. This premise is the key to understand the meaning to the design actions presented within the Marmomac Meets Academies 2023 exhibition, in the wider cultural space of Marmomac. Prototypes are the real protagonists of the exhibition and they’re able to explain themselves and the research work they hold thanks to their own concreteness and plastic evidence. The exhibition space is square-shaped and it consists of a large "suspended vault" made up of lithic elements that is located above the various prototype solutions built by different universities. Many topics are covered and all of them are linked to the eco-conscious use of the precious lithic material, from the use of thin stone to recomposed stone, from 3D printed stone to structurally optimized stone.

Book Launch: Porfido / Technical Guide of a Noble Stone

Speakers: Andrea Angheben, Grazia Signori

Talking about porphyry means referring to a product and know-how that spans time, sought after for its beauty, strength and durability, one of the most popular Italian products abroad and among the most widely used natural stones in architecture. Rocks similar to porphyry can be found all over the world, but only in Trentino Alto Adige (Italy) do they have the ideal characteristics to become a precious product for paving city squares and streets, parks, villas and gardens, proven by centuries of use. Trentino Porphyry is an extraordinary resource, abundant but not unlimited, capable of telling the world about the value and beauty of products that are Made in Italy. For this reason, it is strategic to appreciate it and guide its correct use by means of communication dedicated to designers, users and administrators in which it clearly emerges why Trentino Porphyry is so special, how the paving is designed, how it is laid, how the production cycle is managed, how circular economy and the sustainability of the product are pursued and achieved. This led to the project to issue the volume entitled “PORPHYRY - technical guide to a noble stone”, an important publication in terms of content and form, designed to be a tool providing professional knowledge for the sector. In fact, following in the footsteps of the manuals produced a few decades ago, but in a modern way and on a national and global scale, this guide illustrates - from a genetic, regulatory, application and maintenance point of view - the product that represents a sector that has recently rediscovered a new international destination, by exporting to over 50 countries.

Stone in Contemporary Architecture. Latest Projects – Lectio Magistralis by Arch. Mario Botta

Speaker: Mario Botta

Organized by: Veronafiere - Order of Architects of Verona

Architecture is the discipline that transforms a territory; it creates new balances from an established one; in a sense architecture shapes history. I am deeply convinced that today’s architectural work is about opening a new dimension in space and memory. It may seem paradoxical, but the more the space of life accelerates, the more we need memory. That is why the changes introduced by architects become a part of our human landscape at a very basic level. They are images which, in the course of time, resurface with different meanings. These images are influenced by the materials we choose. Stone is characterized by its great ductility, as it can alter its aspect, its structure and, as a consequence, its image. As other natural materials, stone, if well treated, improves with age, which is a fundamental variable in architecture.

TALK | New forms of Design / Between research explorations and production needs

Speakers: Domenico Potenza, Vincenzo Pavan, Raffaello Galiotto, Massimo Russo

Organized by: Veronafiere

Today, in Italy, the profound and widespread culture of design offers itself as an intangible infrastructure for Made in Italy, as demonstrated by the close link between the most qualified designers and the industrial production chains. However, there is still a lot to do, especially in spreading the culture of quality design, trying to expand its penetration into new production sectors, in addition to existing ones: an indispensable expansion to make the national production system more solid and competitive. It is precisely from the advanced evolution of the production system that new experiments on stone design and new methods of processing stone, marble, granite and composite materials are born. For some years now, the development and technological innovation of numerical control machines have increasingly involved stone materials in industrial production. This is an innovative dimension, all linked to the nature of a material which, in itself, does not lend itself well to the standardization of production processes. A renewed partnership between the experimentation of design research and the new forms of company production is based on these aspects; a complementarity and an interaction that is strongly sought after, desired and, at least in part, implemented. A new form of renaissance is measured directly with the individual needs of end customers, responding to their need for diversification and customization. It is a path that radically changes the industrial paradigm and helps to define, in the network society, the same concept of authorship that previously linked the designer to the product in one direction. The most interesting aspect of these new forms of production can bring the humanistic spirit back into play through the advanced technologies of the third industrial revolution. A model to nurture and promote, both in Italy and abroad, starting precisely from the continuous collaboration between research explorations and production needs.

The Soul of Stone

Speakers: Aquilialberg Architects (Switzerland), Bureau (Switzerland), Nenmar (UK), THDP Studio (UK)

Organized by: Veronafiere, Platform

In a world where technology touches the incredible, marble remains a timeless work of art, embedded in the soul of architecture and design. This stone, ancient and majestic, has its roots deeply entwined with history, carrying intrinsic beauty and silent strength. Each block of marble conceals a story, a past sedimented in its layers. When shaped by the hand of man, it almost seems as if its veins vibrate with life. Like an abstract work of art, marble is a dialogue between light and shadow, an eternal play between light and dark. Its rippled texture captures the sunlight, dancing with the rays and creating an atmosphere of mystery and contemplation. In architecture, marble bestows grandeur upon buildings, majesty upon columns, and solemnity upon entrances. Symbolizing eternity, marble is the emblem of a durability that defies the ephemeral nature of human time. In temples and cathedrals, it represents unwavering faith, the divine essence in which our aspiration to something greater than ourselves is revealed. In design, marble transforms into sculpted jewels, unique pieces that elevate the environment surrounding them. The delicacy of marble merges with functionality, creating utilitarian works of art. A marble table becomes the stage upon which life unfolds, while a marble sculpture is an ode to purity and form. But marble is more than a noble material; it is a metaphysical journey into our interiority. When we touch it, it seems as though the secrets of nature are revealed, time flowing in a circular current, uniting the past, present, and future. We bear witness to a primordial harmony, a timeless beauty that invites us to contemplate the sublime. In its coolness, marble teaches us to find the warmth of human essence, for its hardness is merely the concretization of what is strong and indelible within ourselves. It challenges us to see beyond the surface, to grasp the depth of the soul and the intensity of emotions. Thus, marble becomes a philosophical experience, an invitation to reflect on our foundations, our connections with the past, and the construction of a future etched in the stone of our dreams. In an increasingly digital world, where everything appears virtual and fleeting, marble reminds us of our earthly essence and our connection to history and nature. And as architecture and design evolve, marble remains immutable and immortal, a testimony to our continuous desire for transcendence through the intrinsic beauty of the stone that encapsulates the soul of humanity.
